Тема была бы почти серьезна (сценарий написан Ричардом Бруксом), но сам фильм избегает серьезности. В нем можно разглядеть разрушительные последствия религиозного фанатизма, растущего из людской доверчивости, а также людских страхов и стыда. Сама режиссура - увы - статична до такой степени, что впору сомневаться, принадлежит ли она Сиодмаку. Судя по всему, она претерпела влияние продюсера Джорджа Уэггнера, великого халтурщика и поденщика. Отметим, что фильм поднимает тему сестер-двойняшек, неразличимых внешне, но противоположных внутренне - эту тему Сиодмак разовьет в Темном зеркале, The Dark Mirror, 1946. Картина типична для тех лет, когда Голливуд без комплексов доходил до границ своих самых бредовых фантазий. Фильм источает двусмысленное очарование, порождаемое необычной смесью серьезности (в гомеопатических дозах), иронии (сюжет порой очень забавно высмеивает религиозные суеверия) и крайней наивности. -
